Reinhold Messner – mountaineering legend, author and adventurer – announced the South Tyrol mountains to the entire world. With his Messner Mountain Museum he succeeded in presenting a new concept, which brings together five energy-filled places and showcases them in all their special ways.
Five museums, the Ripa in Brunico Castle, Firmian at Sigmundskron Castle near Bolzano, Ortles in Solda sull’Ortles, Dolomites between Pieve di Cadore and Cortina d’Ampezzo and Juval at Juval Castle in the Vinschgau, are among these exceptional encounters.
Ripa in Brunico, just a few minutes’ drive from our hotels in South Tyrol, is an exhibition about the mountain peoples of Asia, Africa, South America and Europe. There is particular emphasis upon the culture of the people, religions and tourism in these different latitudes.
Films, authentic dwellings as well as a variety of exhibits, demonstrating the heritage on the mountain, distinguish the multi-media set-up.

The core of the Messner Mountain Museum is situated in Bolzano at Sigmundskron Castle. The conflict between people and mountain is in the focus here in the skilful art installations and artefacts. In contrast, in Ortles in Solda sull’Ortles the element ice is to the fore in the exhibit, in the Dolomites in Cortina it is the rocks, while Juval recounts the mysterious mountain.
All five museums are located in the midst of a breath-taking natural setting and are connected to the hiking trails, which connect all five meeting places to one another.
